Royston cave film shortlisted for prize

A FILM about the mysteries of Royston cave has been shortlisted for an award.

Commissioned by the Royston History Society and produced by Hitchin-based firm Film Infinity Video Production, the film gives viewers the chance to explore the cave.

It will premier at the St Albans Film Festival on March 10, and has been nominated for an award as part of the festival.

James Robinson, cave manager, said: “The DVD features footage of the major carvings with a commentary by Richard Whitmore plus special features including interviews with local authors Sylvia Beamon and Peter Houldcroft, and conservation expert Tobit Curteis.”

Royston cave lies 30 feet below Melbourn Street. Its origins and purpose are shrouded in mystery and despite extensive research experts have yet to discover why it was originally built.

The cave itself reopens to visitors for the summer on March 30.
