A 48-year-old motorist from Royston who drove a Range Rover while more than twice the alcohol limit has been banned from the road and handed a bill for almost £1,500.

Anthony Bekesi, of Ivy Lane, drove the Range Rover Sport in his home street on Tuesday, March 21 – and admitted drunk driving when he appeared before Stevenage magistrates on Monday.

Chairman of the bench Eleanor Cooke banned Bekesi from holding a driving licence for 20 months, which is obligatory for the offence, and also ordered him to pay a £1,269 fine, £85 in costs and a £126 victim surcharge – a total of £1,480.

The 20-month driving ban will be reduced by 20 weeks if Bekesi completes a drink-drive rehabilitation course by May 10 next year.

Bekesi was found to have 77 microgrammes of alcohol in millilitres of breath.

The alcohol limit for driving is 35 microgrammes of alcohol in each 100 millilitres of breath, 80 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, or 107 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of urine.
