People have until next Thursday to have their say on an application to turn an empty Royston shop into a gym.

The application to turn the old retail unit at 1 Priory Lane into a health and fitness centre was put forward by developer Tony Mottram and the gym would consist of running machines and weights.

There would also be spinning classes held upstairs, where any noise could be contained. The windows would also be closed permanently to eliminate any noise.

Bike racks could be fixed on the outside of the gym, and people would be expected to park their cars in public car parks nearby.

The application goes on to explain: “The opening hours will be 6am until 10pm. We would like to change the main doors and windows to update the front visual aspect, with a sign for advertising.”

Daniel Jacklin, who lives in Royston, said: “I think it’s a fantastic idea, the building is a bit of an eyesore at the moment and probably doesn’t lend itself particularly well to retail due to being isolated from the main town centre.

“It is better than leaving the property empty or turning it into flats.”
