Royston & District Motorcycle Club draws in the crowds for big June meet

Thousands of bikers – from Royston, the surrounding villages and beyond – have saddled up for an annual meet which raises money for good causes.
For more than 30 years the Royston & District Motorcycle Club have held an ever-expanding show on the third Wednesday in June, with nearly 3,000 bikers and enthusiasts descending upon Meldreth’s Eternit Sports and Social Club for this year’s event.
The sheer number of bikers who ride to the show astounded event co-ordinator Mark Coningsby.
He said: “The show has a reputation in the area now, one built on for more than 32 years, to be a show for the bikes.
“We had 42 exhibitors this year, but we had 2,400 bikes being exhibited – and I haven’t a clue where they all come from!”
At the show there were different categories bikers could enter, including Best Japanese Bike, Best Scooter, Best Custom and, of course, Best in Show.
The RDMCC event has raised more than £14,500 for local causes including the East Anglian Air Ambulance, which landed at the show again this year, and the SERV Blood Bikes teams from Suffolk and Cambs, and Herts and Beds.
The RDMCC is also continuing to support the children and young people at Aurora Meldreth School and Orchard Manor Residential service by raising funds for pieces of equipment which would not normally be provided.
This year there was even a drone flying over the show, with the video of this viewed more than 6,000 times within the first day of being up on the club’s Facebook page.
On the back of this success, the group think next year might be even bigger.
The RDMCC meet every first and third Wednesday of the month at the Eternit in Meldreth’s Whaddon Road, with the highlight of the meets being the June show.
Upcoming events include a Honda Night in Whaddon from 8pm on Wednesday, July 5, and a ride to Great Yarmouth on Saturday, July 8.
New bikers are always welcome and if you have any questions about the RDMCC, or want to know more about membership or anything else, email firstname.lastname@example.org or follow @Roystonbikers on Twitter
