Highways officers are monitoring a dip on a busy Royston road amid fears a dangerous ‘sinkhole’ could appear.

The road surface on Old North Road, Royston, near the turning for Gower Road, has been sagging since the turn of the year, and residents have raised concerns that it may collapse, causing a sinkhole like those that have appeared around the country during the winter months.

Royston resident Jackie Reacher said: “Hertfordshire Highways, Affinity Water and North Herts District Council are all aware of the situation, which has been steadily worsening since Christmas. Residents have also tweeted Oliver Heald due to their concern.

“Must we simply wait for the road to collapse before anything is done? Its an extremely large area, and the road is very busy.”

Fiona Hill, Royston’s county councillor, told the Crow: “We have been aware of this since before Christmas, and Highways Officers have been investigating.

“The cause of the dip is unclear at the moment, they think it could be to do with the drains, but officers are monitoring the situation.”
