Visitors to a village school can now marvel at a mosaic created by pupils, staff and members of the community that welcomes them to the entrance hall.

The dazzling artwork at Therfield First School took three full days to put together, with every child contributing personalised designs with a natural world theme.

Staff, parents, governors – as well as community members including The Fox and Duck landlord Ivan Titmuss – have all played their part in the project, which was the brainchild of headteacher Tara McGovern.

Artist Nina Juby-Shaw practically moved into the school for the duration of the project, which has also been documented by Tara with a ‘making of the mosaic’ display.

Reflecting on the achievement, she said: “I could not be happier with our finished mosaic. It is exactly what I hoped it would be, and more.

“It immediately gives a warm welcome to all visitors to our super school and we’re all immensely proud at what we have achieved together.

“Tile by tile we have together created a long lasting legacy for our school – it’s a real life work of art!”

Eight-year-old Lulu Rudd has declared it the ‘best thing the school has ever done’, while Izzy Arnott – also eight – think it looks ‘really cool’.

Project leader Nina added: “Completing my first large mosaic project at Therfield School was a rewarding experience. Spending time with the children and staff was a pleasure and seeing the final work displayed in the reception area should fill everyone involved with a great sense of achievement.”
