FULL resurfacing of a street plagued by potholes is taking place this week.

As reported in the Crow last month, resident Maureen Butler has been calling for work to be carried out in Icknield Walk, Royston, for the last two years after a “trench” and several pot-holes developed in the road surface.

Now the road is being completely re-tarmaced after funding was found for the scheme under the county council’s Winter Recovery programme.

Cllr Fiona Hill, Royston’s county councillor, said: “Icknield Walk has deteriorated significantly this winter. Highways have been patching it up where they can but this work needs doing and I’m delighted it is now being carried out.”

It is expected that the work will be complete by the end of the week. Cllr Hill added that she was pressing for work to be carried out on other streets nearby, such as Garden Walk, which also need some repairs.

She said: “There are several streets in the town that need attention. Icknield Walk is one that has deteriorated beyond the level that is expected, and a road which is used by people from all over the town. It doesn’t just affect residents because there is a school and shop there.”

Royston’s Labour councillor Rob Inwood led calls for the work to take place, and said he was “absolutely delighted” that the situation had been resolved.

But he added: “It’s a great shame that it has taken almost two years for these repairs and that residents have had to suffer for so long.”
