The Green Man, in Market Hill, closed on Sunday. Licensees Andy and Karen Hoy have left after 11 years to take over at The Chequers in Orwell.

In a statement posted at The Green Man, which is owned by Punch Taverns, they said: “In the 11 years we have been at The Green Man much has changed.

“Out landlords, Punch Taverns, have increased our rent by 250 per cent. Our rateable value has increased by 235 per cent, and every year the breweries add around five pence to the price of a pint, yet still discount to the supermarkets.

“Goodbye and a huge thanks for all your support.”

The Green Man has become renowned for hosting live music events, and is one of the only venues in Royston to cater for gigs.

A spokesman for Punch Taverns said: “The Green Man is temporarily closed and we apologise for any inconvenience caused. Our priority is to re-open it as soon as possible.”
