Police have launched an investigation following a fatal crash in Royston yesterday evening where a fire engine responding to an emergency call collided with a pedestrian.

Specialist officers from the Road’s Policing Unit are investigating the fatal incident which happened in Royston at about 8.45pm.

The engine from Herts Fire and Rescue Service was travelling along Old North Road and was in the process of making a right hand turn into Burns Road when, for reasons unknown at this time, it lost control and overturned.

The vehicle collided with a pedestrian who has sadly died from their injuries, police have confirmed.

Their next of kin has been made aware and family liaison officers will be providing full support.

There were four occupants in the fire engine at the time of the incident and all sustained minor injuries.

An ambulance service spokeswoman said a second patient was been taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge with minor injuries.

Police, the ambulance service and East Anglian Air Ambulance all attended the scene, with road closures in place overnight.

The fire engine has since been recovered, and will be examined as part of the investigation.
