Plans for 300 new homes in Royston would result in a loss of privacy for those living in adjoining streets, according to a resident.

Rob Ahmet, of Hawthorn Way, contacted the Crow after taking part in consultation on plans for the development, on land off Newmarket Road.

He said: “I own a property on Hawthorn Way which I purchased in 2010. The property overlooks the beautiful farmland of which the development is proposed.

“We have spent time and money redesigning our garden to enjoy the views. This development would not only be a major loss of open space, but the new dwellings would overlook our property, blocking natural daylight and causing a loss of privacy.”

The development, which has been earmarked as a potential housing site in the district council’s local development plan, could also feature a pub or restaurant.

But Mr Ahmet said: “In the past three years we have seen the development
of other sites, all which have been offered as affordable homes for Royston. Now we are being confronted with the possibility of 300 extra homes and a pub/restaurant.

“I don’t believe that filling every available space with developments will benefit Royston.”

When the plans were announced, Dan Angell, of developers Tristan Fitzgerald Associates, said the firm considered the site a “logical, sensible” site for housing.

A planning application has yet to be submitted, but this week an archaeological investigation has been going on at the site, with soil samples being collected.
