A PILOT has been airlifted to hospital with “life-threatening” injuries after his plane crash landed last night (Friday).

The man, on board a single-seater light aircraft, was flown by air ambulance to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge after his plane came down in a field near Newnham Way in Ashwell at around 6.20pm.

Emergency services were called to the scene, including the East Anglian Air Ambulance, two land ambulances from Letchworth GC and fire crews from Baldock and Royston.

East of England Ambulance Service spokesman Gary Sanderson said: “A man received life threatening injuries and following treatment, stabilisation and immobilisation by land and air ambulance crews, he was flown to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge for further care.”

Ashwell resident Ellen Wainwright-Lee said: “I’m amazed we didn’t hear it. I saw fire engines and ambulances, and the police closed the road.

“We were right next door and we didn’t see it.”
