A petition has been launched to try to save a Royston bank from closure.

Clive Porter has secured hundreds of signatures on his petition to save the town’s branch of NatWest, which is set to close on June 11 – with the bank citing a rise in online banking.

Clive told the Crow: “I am already into triple figures with signatures from locals, quite a number of whom have only recently become customers at this branch.

“Their anger at this decision from the faceless hierarchy, which will create a negative impact on the area, cannot be underestimated.

“The fat cats who decided the fate of this branch and its staff will get fatter, while the public, as usual, will suffer.”

Copies of the petition are in Ladds and Stationery Cupboard in High Street, as well as Dysons menswear in Market Hill – but Clive says he needs more help to collect names in Royston and the surrounding villages.

Call him on 07767 352989 if you think you can help.

• UPDATE Dec 19: The petition has now amassed more than 500 signatures and is now also in Costa Coffee in High Street.

“It’s doing very well – people are literally grabbing it out of my hand,” Clive said.
