A website is being set up to help promote businesses in the Royston area.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The free service, SG8, is being launched by local businessman Oliver Waite, who addressed the latest meeting of the Save Royston Town Centre group, which was held last Wednesday.

Traders from across the town attended the meeting, along with county and district councillors Fiona Hill and Tony Hunter.

Mr Waite said: “The town centre is very important to me. I have a feeling for Royston so I decided to set up a web site in an attempt to promote local businesses across a broader area.

“A site such as this can deliver any information required of it, from opening times, news flashes, jobs, special offers and much more.

“Royston can not compete like for like with centres such as Cambridge, but it can win business based on people wanting to shop here, because they can see and hear the businesses local to them. A number of local businesses have already signed up, but to make the system successful we need many more.”

Other topics discussed at the meeting included the closure of the fish, meat and deli counters at Morrisons, which shut down last month as part of a refurbishment of all Morrisons stores across the country.

Clive Porter, who chairs the group, has spoken to the firm’s headquarters and will be starting a petition to get the counters re-opened.

Mr Porter said: “I was delighted that so many individuals had come together in an effort to take the town forward, and improve its image as a shopping centre.”

The next meeting of the group will be held early in the new year.

Any businesses keen to sign up to the new website and get their details listed should email info@sg8business.co.uk.
