The three winning pieces have been placed on the fencing surrounding the North Herts Homes (NHH) owned former Priory Cinema site at the corner of Melbourn Street and Newmarket Road.

Students from Roysia Middle School and the Meridian School were behind the designs which portray the three aspects of the Royston 2012: Year of Celebration – the Queens Jubilee, the London 2012 Olympics and the 850th anniversary of Royston Priory.

Town councillor Lindsay Davidson, Royston 2012 chairman, was among the many dignitaries who attended the ceremony on Wednesday.

“They are absolutely brilliant. They encapsulate what our 2012 year of celebration is about, covering the Queen’s Jubilee, the Olympics, and the priory anniversary,” she said.

“They have covered it all and it is all, the murals are up and they are all really good.”

Cllr Davidson was joined by the young artists, teachers from their schools, representatives from NHH, councillors and the town’s MP Oliver Head.

Mr Heald praised the designs and the project and said the children “will remember this year for the rest of their lives”.

He added: “I think it’s great that our young have been able to get involved and take part in our year of celebration.”

North Herts Homes and Rowan Homes have supported the project and paid for the installation.

The Crow last week revealed the former home of the Green Plunge swimming pool, cinema and an Indian restaurant, may be developed for housing.

NHH has submitted a planning application to North Herts District Council outlining a 24 home development.

Previous designs for the sites, including a proposed sheltered housing scheme, have fallen flat.
