A man who sexually assaulted a woman in Meldreth has been given a 15-month suspended jail sentence.

Nigel Sirett, 53, of Whitecroft Road, Meldreth, attacked the victim at an address in the village on February 10 last year.

The victim called police and Sirett was charged with attempted rape and sexual assault.

He was cleared of the attempted rape but convicted of sexual assault following a trial at Cambridge Crown Court.

On Friday he was sentenced to 15 months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years.

He was also ordered to pay a total of £3,100 in court costs and placed on the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years.

Det Con Rich Seston said: “This been a traumatic ordeal for the victim who also had to go through giving evidence at court.

“We’re pleased he has been brought to justice and hope it helps her to move on with her life.”
