An air museum is set to commence a major redevelopment project after receiving lottery funding of just under £1million.

The American Air Museum, which was established in 1997 and is based at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford, has received a £980,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

A three-stage redevelopment of the museum is being undertaken, the first part of which will involve creating a new website to showcase the Freeman collection, a compilation of 15,000 prints and slides showing American service-men and women in Britain during the second world war.

The museum itself will also be refreshed, while conservation work will be undertaken on its aircraft and artefacts.

Diane Lees, Director General of Imperial War Museums said: “I am delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has supported the American Air Museum redevelopment. This exciting project will bring to life Anglo-American relations past, present and future, in a way that enthralls and engages. Whoever we are, wherever we live, this is our story and one that we can work together on for the benefit of future generations.”
