Pub managers from across Hertfordshire and beyond stopped pulling pints and started pushing pedals to raise money for Macmillan on Thursday.

Managers from across Hertfordshire and beyond convened on the Doctors Tonic in Welwyn Garden City on May 24 to hop onto exercise bikes and challenge themselves by cycling the distance from London to Paris.

Their efforts raised over £700 for the charity.

On three exercise bikes lent by the Howard Centre’s Anytime Fitness arrayed outside the front of the pub, they managed to cover the full 295 miles by 2.30pm.

But that wasn’t the end of it. The day continued with hook the duck, ‘soak the boss’, a cake sale, a barbecue, and a sponsored head shave.

Doctors Tonic manager Laura Blase said her stint on the bike was “painful!

“But it’s for a good cause. Everyone knows somebody living with cancer, whether it is a friend, family member or colleague and events like these are a great way to involve the local community to support such an important cause.

“It’s been a great success.”

She said that bemused punters absolutely loved watching the managers’ antics, and showed their enthusiasm with generous donations - and, of course, by eating plenty of burgers at the barbecue.

Laura was joined by managers from pubs including the the Grove in Welwyn Garden City, the White Hart and the Speckled Hen in St Albans, the Yorkshire Grey in Biggleswade, the Cock in Hitchin, the Dolphin in Melbourn, the Mulberry Tree and the Pied Piper in Stevenage.

Macmillan is the chosen charity of pub group Greene King, and annually the group holds ‘Macmillan May’ with an overall annual fundraising target of £300,000.

Rachel Gascoigne, partnership manager at Macmillan Cancer Support, said “Events like these are the reason why our partnership with Greene King has been so successful.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the support.”
