The 1940s came to life in Duxford at the weekend for the Imperial War Museum’s annual flying legends air show.

Thousands of visitors enjoyed a nostalgic weekend at the museum, with plans including Piper L-4 Cubs, a Grumman F8F Bearcat, F6F Hellcat, FM2 Wildcat and Goodyear FG-1D Corsair taking to the skies.

Eleven spitfires also put in appearance as well as a Boeing P-26 Peashooter, which made its only 2014 appearance at the show.

On the ground, the vintage village was kitted out in authentic 1940s fashion, and visitors could enjoy the sounds of The Winslow Concert Band performing 1940s songs and The Manhattan Dolls, direct from New York, performing wartime swing classics in Andrews Sisters-style.

There was also the chance to clamber aboard the Home Front Bus and see reconstructions of a 1940s living room, a wartime shop, a bombed-out street and an air raid shelter.

A pair of Laurel and Hardy impersonators were also presents, and they got into another fine mess with some slapstick comedy aboard their model T Ford car.
