The Hertfordshire County Council election saw Labour’s representation in County Hall savaged as the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats both ended up with gains.

The final votes were counted this morning and ended with 51 Conservatives being elected, along with 18 Liberal Democrats and nine Labour representatives.

The Tories now have a 24-strong majority, up from 16 before the election, while Labour lost over a third of its members – down five from 14.

Liberal Democrats also ate into the Labour seats, gaining two, to finish this morning with 18.

Overall there were 290,428 votes, of which 45.9 per cent were Conservative, 25.1 per cent Lib Dem, 20.5 per cent Labour, 7.8 per cent ‘Other’ and 0.4 per cent Independent.
