OUTSTANDING servants of Royston have been honoured for the role they play in the community.

The Royston Community Service awards were announced by mayor Paul Grimes at the annual town meeting held last Thursday.

Just weeks before it is dissolved to make way for the Royston First Business Improvement District (BID) company, the Royston Town Centre Forum was recognised for the hard work put in by members of the Royston First group to secure a successful vote for the BID.

Royston Town Band also picked up an award for many years of fundraising, and the time and pleasure given to patients in Royston Hospital and local nursing homes on Christmas Day.

After 30 years of sterling work collecting for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, Joe McDonald received an accolade, as did archaeologist Sylvia Beamon, who was praised for the time she has given to organising and helping set up the museum's Time Trackers group, and many other projects within the town.

The town council's Community Chest awards were also announced, with 10 different organisations receiving funding for community projects. These included the Royston Arts Festival, the Pink Ribbon run/walk, and the Royston Twinning Association.
