Rail commuters through North Herts are facing heavy delays this morning with damage to overhead wires at Welwyn North station causing disruption on the Great Northern line.

The problem arose overnight, when workers were carrying out maintenance to the line.

There are reports that a crane fell on the overhead wires.

Trains between Stevenage and London King’s Cross are being delayed by up to an hour, changed, or completely cancelled – and the incident is not expected to resolve until midday.

The lines re-opened at about 9am but trains are still out of place leading to continued delays.

There are services running between Welwyn Garden City station and Hertford North or London, but they will not be stopping at Welwyn North or Knebworth.

There is a rail replacement bus operating between Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City which will be stopping at those stations.

A spokesperson from Govia – which runs the Great Northern service – apologised for the inconvenience, urged passengers to check train timetables before they travel and reminded affected commuters about the delay repay scheme.
