A village will hold an annual event where visitors will have the opportunity to see a medieval farmhouse and gardens.

The village of Ashwell will welcome visitors to its Ashwell at Home event next weekend, where guests can enjoy a wide range of things to see and do, with entertainment for all the family.

Sixteen gardens will be open next weekend, including a medieval farmhouse enclosed by a moat and two nuclear bunkers.

Visitors can also see the village lock-up, which is no longer in use and participate in a live archaeological test-pit dig.

Children under 14 can enjoy free workshops in the village school throughout the day including singing and drama, making and then racing junk boats, tennis fun and a mosaic making master class.

There will also be lots happening around the village including live music with singing Tudors, buskers and harp recitals and classical duets, English village Morris men dancing, and veteran cyclist riding.

Ashwell Cricket Club will be in action as members mark their 200th anniversary, while there will be opportunities to have a go at milking cows at the dairy, basket making, rare sheep wool weaving.

A Made in Ashwell craft display and market, selling goods from the surrounding area will also be held.

And visitors will also have the chance to visit the 14th century St Mary’s Church where graffiti from the time of the Black Death is displayed.

Refreshments will be available throughout the day with homemade lunches at the school and light refreshments and teas at all venues.

Entry to Ashwell at Home, which is being held on Saturday, May 11, from midday until 6pm, is by programme, available on the day.

The cost is £6 per person, with accompanied children under 14 going free.

Free parking is also available and all proceeds from the event will go to Ashwell Museum, St Mary’s Church and Ashwell Primary School.
