Planning committees across Hertfordshire are busy as ever, with plenty of applications and appeals coming through.

We've compiled a list of just some of the applications that are currently pending or have been approved in our areas.

Here are some that might have gone under the radar.

1. Stevenage Morrisons plans scrapped

Plans to build a Morrisons superstore in Stevenage have been scrapped due to rising financial costs.

The supermarket giant had been preparing to build the new store, with 5,326 sq m gross / 2,995 sq m net floorspace, on the corner of Cartwright Road and Wedgwood Way, after Stevenage Borough Council granted planning permission in May last year.

The multi-million-pound investment had promised up to 285 local jobs, but Morrisons has now scrapped the plans.

A spokesperson for the supermarket said: "Due to rising borrowing costs and build cost inflation, it is no longer commercially viable for us to progress the store.

"After exploring all potential options, we have reluctantly concluded that we are unable to proceed with our plans in Stevenage, and so we will not be pursuing this site further."

2. Club 85 plans withdrawn

A planning application to demolish Hitchin's Club 85 and replace it with 16 apartments has been withdrawn, but the iconic music venue still looks set to close.

The plans, submitted by the owners of Club 85 back in September last year, proposed to knock down the Whinbush Road site, and build five one-bed and 11 two-bed properties in its place.

In a statement at the time, landlords Jas and Ranjit Lidder described developing Club 85 as the "best choice" ahead of their planned retirement in 2025, but North Herts Council's planning portal is now showing the plans as withdrawn.

Despite the plans being withdrawn and music fans hoping that the venue could be saved, it appears Club 85 is still set to close, with a farewell show scheduled to take place on December 30.

3. New Welwyn Garden City eatery

Welwyn Garden City looks set to get a new café and restaurant, after a premises licence request and planning application were submitted.

Hollybush Café and Restaurant appears to be taking over 158 Hollybush Lane, with the unit currently vacant after bakery Mrs C's closed down.

An application has been submitted for a premises licence, which would allow the new business to sell alcohol between 10am and 9pm, with opening hours set to be from 8am to 10pm.

A planning application, which is currently under consultation, has also been submitted for the property, with plans to install a new extractor fan on the roof and make alterations to the shopfront.

4. Potters Bar school plans

A planning application has been submitted to demolish a former Potters Bar school to make way for a new Special Educational Needs and Disabilities site.

The plans, submitted by Hertfordshire County Council's Spatial Planning Unit, would see a block and two temporary classroom buildings - formerly part of Sunny Bank Infants School - knocked down.

The site in Field View Road would then see a new 1,828sqm SEND school built.

Sunny Bank Infants School was earmarked for closure by Hertfordshire County Council in September 2006, to combat surplus pupil places in Potters Bar, before finally closing in 2008 after almost 50 years of teaching.

5. Roaring Meg units could split

A unit in Stevenage's Roaring Meg retail park could be split into two to make it "more attractive to prospective tenants and shoppers".

Unit 3 has been empty since its previous occupant, Argos, closed its doors for good in November last year.

Now, Isle of Man-based Stevenage Retail Ltd, which owns the retail park as part of its 9Yards portfolio, is planning to "carry out a series of carefully focussed improvements, to enhance the tenant mix and create a better customer experience".

According to a Design and Access Statement submitted to the borough council, potential tenants are currently being "put off" by factors including a lack of windows at the front of the store, a lack of prominence in the Retail Park, and a large unit that is "difficult to let".
