Grassroots sports facilities are set to be transformed in Stevenage and North East Hertfordshire after local organisations were awarded more than £34,000 in funding.

The government recently announced grants worth £68 million to be spent on creating and improving more than 1,700 sports facilities across the UK.

In Stevenage and North East Hertfordshire, the biggest beneficiary of this is set to be Hertfordshire FA. They have been awarded £14,250 to spend on replacing fencing and gates at the County Ground in Letchworth. The work is expected to cost £19,000 in total.

The following applications were also successful in North East Hertfordshire:

  • £5,256 towards portable floodlights and goalposts for Ashwell Academicals FC, based at Small Gains Playing Fields
  • £1,440 towards goalposts at Heath Sports Club in Royston

Meanwhile, in Stevenage, the following applications were successful:

  • £3,640 towards a storage container for Fairlands Youth FC at Martins Wood Primary School
  • £3,341 and £707 towards goalposts at Knebworth Recreation Ground
  • £3,124 towards portable floodlights for Stevenage FC Foundation
  • £2,265 towards goalposts for Watton Youth FC at Datchworth All Saints Church of England Primary School
