Royston Rotary and the Meldreth Ukrainian Support Group held a Christmas party for the children of Ukrainian refugee families living in the area.

The party was held at Meldreth Village Hall on Saturday, December 17.

Many of the children attending had hoped to go home for Christmas, but were forced to remain in the UK due to the escalation of air attacks, along with freezing temperatures and a lack of electricity and water.

Hotel Chocolat and The Emissary Prosecco offered some festive cheer for parents, while Rotary provided presents for the children and refreshments for all.

Rotary president Peter Mitton said: "A highlight of the evening was the appearance of Father Christmas with a large sack of presents.

"I’d like to offer particular thanks for the efforts of the Meldreth support group, together with the help of the local companies and South Cambs District Council, in making the event such a success. The children certainly had a wonderful time."

Hilary Crawforth, of the support group, added: "We are so grateful to Rotary for enabling us to give these families a few hours of fun away from their thoughts of the dangers their loved ones are suffering in Ukraine. Your generosity was much appreciated by us all.

"The mums were so surprised to receive the chocolates and the children were very thrilled with their presents. They have so little here - a bag each of clothes - that something of their own makes a big impact."
