Royston kicked off the festive period in style with the official switch on of the town's Christmas tree and lights.

The event, held at the end of last month, saw 500 residents descend on Roysia's Cross to see the town switch on its Christmas decorations.

Organisers Royston First spent much of the year planning the free community event, alongside Royston Town Council and lighting contractor Sparkx.

The event was officially opened by a speech from Royston First chairman David Smyth, who welcomed the crowd and thanked businesses for staying open later than usual for late-night shopping.

Before the lights were switched on, staff from Royston Leisure Centre got the crowd warmed up with dancing and music, and a group from Lift Off Choir performed classic Christmas songs to get everyone in the festive spirit.

For the main event, the Mayor of Royston Cllr Mary Antony was invited to switch on the Christmas lights. Families also flocked to see the illuminated Christmas tree and the giant present in Fish Hill.

Reed Choir entertained the crowd with Christmas carols to bring the event to a close.

Throughout the switch-on, free cupcakes were handed out by newly-opened Royston business Kelly's Kitchen, while Belle's Enchanted Parties painted children's faces - all of which was funded by Royston First.

Complimentary refreshments were also provided by The Manor House Wetherspoon's and the Jolly Postie.

David Smyth said: "What an amazing event we’ve had in Royston.

"Thank you to the residents for coming out to support the lights switch on, to all the businesses who supported the event, and to the businesses that stayed open to the public.

"It was a fantastic way to begin the festivities and the first of many exciting Christmas events we’ve got planned in the town.

"We would also like to thank Abbot Travel, Flintshack and the Old Court House for providing power for the lights in Fish Hill Square.

"Following feedback from last year, we are delighted to add new lighting installations in this area.

"We hope that everyone will Shop Local and support our retailers this Christmas."

Royston First is running many other events leading up to Christmas Day.

The Christmas Elf Trail is running in shop windows around the town centre until Sunday, December 11 - with children invited to find Santa's missing elves for a chance to win a Christmas sweets hamper.

Limitless Academy is also putting on an immersive festive show for children and adults, called 'DIY S.O.C (Save Our Christmas)'.

Tickets to the show include a short performance as well as a meet and greet with Santa himself.

Royston Museum is also hosting a Dickensian Christmas on Saturday, December 10 - with children invited to play Victorian games, make yuletide decorations, listen to carols, drink mulled wine and meet Father Christmas in the museum's winter grotto.

Another Santa's grotto will be open at Royston Library from 10am to 12.30pm on Saturday, organised by Royston Scouts.

On the same day, a festive funfair will be held in Fish Hill Square.
