A nine-year-old girl from Royston with a winning eye for design has been named regional winner of a national competition.

Charlotte Coghlan, a pupil at King James Academy, entered the competition to design a pair of glasses at Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care in High Street.

Children were encouraged to submit their designs, with proceeds from the suggested £1 entry fee going to the Alzheimer's Society.

Charlotte was presented with a model of her design and a collection of Roald Dahl books at the opticians.

Her mum Kelly said: "Charlotte was at the branch for an eye test, saw the competition and decided to enter. She likes art and she loves sport.

"Her design was inspired by the Commonwealth Games."
