After suffering defeats in their last two fixtures the Reds were looking to kick-start their league campaign against the Blues on a beautiful spring morning at the Rec.

Blues kicked off but were soon under pressure from their hosts.

Jonah Stekly - ably supported by George French - Krishan Puvvada and a thrusting Finlay Burchett, forced the visitors back and the Shefford goal was under almost constant bombardment.

Joe Failletiaz and Jamie Caldwell and goalie Ben Sams were largely spectators in the first half but Shefford defended resolutely and half-time came with the score 0-0.

The Reds started the 2nd half in the same vein but now with Josh Haigh and Oli Struebel on the pitch and Shefford responded in kind.

However, the Blues scored direct from their first corner of the match when the usually assured Reds defence failed to clear.

This stung Bassingbourn into their best spell of the game when they suddenly found their passing boots and they swiftly gained the lead through Stekly and Puvvada.

Not to be outdone, though, the Blues came back with a fierce drive from one of their rare attacks which gave Saints no chance and leveled the scores at 2-2.

From then on the Reds threw everything at Shefford but they continued to defend as if their lives depended on it and there were no further goals.

Full credit should go to Shefford for taking their chances and denying Bassingbourn and in particular a special mention for their brave goalie.
