Machetes and swords among knife amnesty haul in Welwyn Hatfield
Reply Quote

I've just finished reading the story "Machetes and swords among knife amnesty haul in Welwyn Hatfield" and I am aghast at what has become of you British.  I just cannot begin to see the logic in having good honest upstanding citizens stepping forward and volunteering to give up one of the few remaining means of self defense that the UK allows.  Anyone care to hazard a guess as to how many of those edged weapons were turned in by muggers, robbers, rapists, etc.??  My opinion..... absolutely none!

Granted this opinion is coming from the US of A where  especially in states like Virginia where I reside, we can not only carry knives, but can openly carry loaded firearms of any sort without license by the government or harassment by law enforcement.  Contrast the rate of murder by firearms/knives, rapes, robberies, home invasions, etc. with our neighboring localities in Washington, DC and Maryland and you find that Virginia is a much, much safer place to live, work, and do business.

We have our share of citizens who feel that a 100% ban on weapons is the answer to crimes, but when examined, the statistics consistently show that the states with the most stringent firearms laws have the highest rate of crimes against property and person.  State with the least stringent laws typically have the lowest rates of crime.  What seems to be driving the 'ban guns' movement is an unreasonable fear induced by the mere sight of a weapon.  This is natural.  Whether you're a criminal or a citizen, when someone flashes a pistol in your face, most people are fearful and for good reason.  When a criminal can be assured that there will be no resistance to his criminal act, he is emboldened.  When the same criminal knows that the next person he encounters while robbing a house may likely be armed, that criminal is headed elsewhere.

Regardless, we as Americans, citizens of the world, human beings have a god given right to defend ourselves and our families.  Mindless bans on guns and knives only increase the boldness of the criminally inclined.  Wake up England!  Enough is enough.  Stop cowering in your homes and in the streets.  Tell your legislators that you want - no DEMAND the right to protect yourselves and your families.  Stop all this nonsense and coddling of criminals.

Long live the 2nd Ammendment!

I don't agree with the right to all to have a gun. I that the times that people with mental illnesses get guns easy then we have bigger chances of  school mass killings etc. I of course do not live in England but in Australia our guns laws are quite strict. More so after the Killings in Port Arthur in Tasmania .After that dreadful day lots of guns were called in. Cheers Aussiegirl
